See on Scoop.it - Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d’Italia

When thinking of Venetian glass the first things that might come in your mind are probably classic Murano wine glasses or chandeliers, but would you ever think of modern living accessories?

This November don’t miss the release of “Modern Living Accessories: 100 Years of Design”, a retrospective trip from 2011 back to 1900 by editors Martin Wellner and Andrea Melhose highlighting the most important design developments of the past 100 years, among which some iconic ones made of Venetian glass:

-from 2010 a light sculpture by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec called “Lighthouse” for Venini and Established and Sons, marrying artisan tradition to modern manufacturing technology;

-from 1968 glass bottles by Tapio Wirkkala for Venini made with the Murano glass incalmo technique, where two different glass bodies are heated separately and then perfectly melted together.

Among the iconic glass pieces to be found in this 512 pages book of design are from 1932 the Cartoccio Vase by Pietro Chiesa, co-founder of FontanaArte and from 1936 the Savoy Vase by Alvar Aalto from Finland an evolution in the shape.

Right after the Second World War when young designer Fulvio Bianconi met Paolo Venini in Murano he designed the famous “Fazzoletto”, made of Venetian glass, continuing the above tradition of sinuous glass shapes.
