Garofoli is one of the top producers of wine from the verdicchio grape in the Castelli dei Jesi area. This family run producer has been making wine there for generations. This is a well priced white with a lot of flavour for a dry Italian white. Expect mild aromas of melon and apple fruit with some nutty complexity. It is medium bodied and creamy with the flavours driving well on to the finish. Very good length. Try with seafood. Tasted April 2012.

When I traveled in the Marches region of Adriatic Italy several years ago I couldn’t understand why the rich, quite substantial regional whites from the verdicchio grape did not command a larger international presence. I am still wondering. This new listing in Ontario captures a cushy, warming yet balanced ambiance with generous, slightly waxy peach-melon and honeyed fruit. There is fresh acidity and even an effervescent prickle cleaning off the slightly bitter finish. The length is very good to excellent. Great with richer seafood pastas and risottos. Tasted June 2012.

I’ve long been a fan of verdicchio, one of Italy’s most potentially interesting white grapes that seems to continue to fly under the radar of wine lovers. This new listing is a great addition to the category of crisp, fruity, unoaked, substantial yet refreshing whites, with fruit ranging from ripe lemon through nectarine and into pineapple and honeydew melon. Acids are fresh and lively, alcohol moderate and well-integrated, while the depth of flavor is impressive at the price, as is the amazingly long finish for a $13 wine. A fine house white option when casual yet serious enough drinking is the order of the day. Tasted September 2012.
