See on Scoop.it - Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d’Italia

The Roads of the Faith in Le Marche: The Via Lauretana

See on Scoop.it - Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d’Italia

The existence of the Sanctuary of Loreto has been documented since 1294, its peculiarity concerns the object of devotion of the faithful, the Holy House of Nazareth, the place of the Annunciation. The house of Mary was formed in a cave, still venerated in the Basilica of the Annunciation, and a manufactured stone leaning against it. According to tradition, in 1291, when the Crusaders lost permanently the Palestine, with the fall of Akko, the House of the Virgin Mary was carried, “under angelic ministry”, firstly in Illyria and then in the territory of Loreto. Today, according to new documented information, with the available results of the archaeological excavations in the basement of the Holy House (1962-65) and philological and iconographic studies, is increasingly confirming the hypothesis that the Holy House was transported to Loreto by ship.

The first news about the Path of Pilgrimage linked to Loreto shrine dates from the early fourteenth century: it is the link between Recanati and the sea in Roman era, this is the first unit of Via Lauretana. In the following decades, the increasing flow of pilgrims is channeled along a major road directions of the Papal States, the one that comes from Rome along the ancient Via Flaminia to Foligno, then crossing the Apennines at the pitch of Colfiorito, getting Ancona through the valleys of the Chienti and Potenza rivers. This route was renamed Via Lauretana, linking the holy cities of Rome and Loreto. The route of the Via Lauretana is defining progressively, with the definitive identification in the eighteenth century.

Along this guideline were increasing signs of Marian devotion and the creation of the transport infrastructure and accommodation necessary for the pilgrimage, especially since the sixteenth century. At that time were borning confraternities dedicated to the service of the pilgrims, and “hospitales” in the cities and in the most inaccessible tracks of the route Loretana (Apennine passes, river crossings, swamps …).

Federal Judge Rules Costa Concordia Lawsuit Should Be Filed in Italy - The National Law Journal

See on Scoop.it - La Gazzetta Di Lella - News From Italy - Italiaans Nieuws

A Fort Lauderdale federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by three passengers and their parents against Miami-based Carnival Corp. over the 2012 capsizing of the Costa Concordia off the coast of Italy.

U.S. District Judge William Dimitrouleas agreed with Carnival that the lawsuit should be filed in Italy, not in the United States. Passengers and Italian businesses have filed lawsuits against Carnival in federal court in the Southern District of Florida because Costa’s parent company is based there.

The cruise line disaster left 32 passengers and crew members dead.

Three of the five plaintiffs are siblings. Adrian, Amanda and Brian Warrick claim they were injured in the wreck. Their parents, Wilhelmina and Ceilito Warrick, sued because they were not allowed to board the Costa Concordia. All are Massachusetts residents.

The Warricks’ tickets each state that all disputes would be resolved in Italian courts, under Italian law. As U.S. citizens, the Warricks asked that their suit be heard in Florida, contending it was a more appropriate forum — a request that is often granted.

But Dimitrouleas found that Carnival would suffer a material injustice if forced to litigate in the U.S. Not only is the ship and other physical evidence located in Italy, so are many of the crew members who might be called to testify. Furthermore, much of the evidence will be in Italian and would require translation if heard in the U.S.

Last year U.S. District Judge Robin Rosenbaum dismissed a lawsuit by a number of Italian businesses seeking damages for financial losses due to the capsizing on similar grounds.

Cipolle al forno - Baked Onions

See on Scoop.it - La Cucina Italiana - De Italiaanse Keuken - The Italian Kitchen

[…] Onions made this way are a perfect accompaniment to roasted or grilled meats, but are so tasty you could make a vegetarian main course out of them.

Ingredients

Serves 4 people as a side course

4 onions, preferably freshSalt and pepperA few sprigs of fresh parsley, finely choppedBest quality, fruity olive oilDry white wine (optional)

Directions

Fresh onions are quite different looking from the usual dried variety that you normally find in the supermaket. They look a bit like giant scallions, but with a more bulbous base, which is your onion.

Young fresh onions don’t generally need peeling since they have not yet formed a papery skin like the usual dried variety, but they need trimming top and bottom to remove stalk and root ends. Then cut the onions in half across their midsection, against the grain so to speak, so their rings are exposed.

Place the onion halves in a well-oiled baking dish, cut side up. Season very generously with salt and pepper, then sprinkle with the parsley. Finally, drizzled the onion halves with best quality olive oil. (See picture above.)

Place the baking dish in a moderate oven (180C/350F) for an hour or more, until the onions are well reduced in size, very soft and slightly caramelized. Baste the onions with their cooking juices every so often as they cook. Be careful not to allow the onions to burn, which will give them a bitter taste. I like the cover them with a sheet of wax paper for the first 30 minutes or so. If need be, you can lower the oven temperature.

One little personal touch: about 5 minutes before they’re done, I like to splash a bit of white wine on top of the onions. This gives the onions a very slight tang, which nicely balances their natural sweetness, and produces a little ‘sauce’ (sughetto) you can pour over the onions when you serve. them.

Let the onions cool slightly before serving.

Alberto Guardiani Spring Summer 2013 Collection

See on Scoop.it - Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d’Italia

WOMAN

The lively tribal call for color.

Sunny, colorful and sensual, the ALBERTO GUARDIANI SS 2013 collection, is designed for a dynamic, contemporary woman who loves to find and combine class, elegance and femininity. A collection where the essential tribal style mixes colours, materials and precious details.

Colour is the undisputed star of the three main themes: tribal neon; gold and stones and golf; it gives life and personality to various shapes of the season, from the ultra-flat ancel sandal to the cube heel, to a plexi heel and finally to the very sensual twelve centimeter heel.

The tribal neon mood is characterized by its essential geometric shapes accented with triangles that are highlighted in contrasting colours, recalling typical tribal designs of the Dayak of Borneo, the Maori of New Zealand and the Native American Indians. Chains, a distinctive tribal accessory, grace double platform styles like the ancel sandals, becoming elegant straps that wrap around the ankle.

The theme of gold and stones is characterized by a small ring, charm par excellence, that enriches the heel. Crystals, stones the colour of sapphires, rubies and emeralds, embellish the collection surrounding the heel, or enriching the upper or straps.

Swarovski crystals are applied to the cube heel as well as to the toe of Stiff, the extra-feminine lace-up that is presented for the summer season in bright colours of cornflower blue and watermelon, while a metallic knit is braided and gilded forming an elegant Celtic knot, its continual loop a symbol of eternity and good fortune.

The typical style of golf is reinterpreted in a stylish mode, on high heels, with fringes embellished with small stones. It takes its cue from the classic golfers’ gloves, evident in the heels in both the choice of their white colour and of the perforated leather.

LIPSTICK HEEL

The iconic model of Alberto Guardiani for SS 2013 continues to evolve: we introduce the new T-bar shoes, while in the strappy sandal the strap rises above the ankle. The heel is finished in part with majolica ceramic tile and the signature lipstick is embellished with a ring.

FLUTTERBY

The butterfly, a symbol of freedom, flits in to became an icon of the new Flutterby capsule collection. The butterfly heel, carefully painted by hand, has its steel core covered with ABS, not applied to the heel but instead glides expertly through the arch of the sole.

Offered in a pump version in suede, or as a sensual sandal in snakeskin and satin, the Flutterby is always characterized by touches of gold that highlight the shape of wings.

WALLPAPER*

A total novelty of the season is the Wallpaper* capsule collection offered in a feminine note. Lace-up and loafers are made of hi-tech fabric blending sartorial elegance with avant-garde materials, water-repellent and stain resistant. The lace-up is made of fabric with tone-on-tone suede, while the loafer combines fabric with calfskin, matching in tone. Offered in classic and elegant colours of black, blue and green the feminine Wallpaper* capsule is enriched by the delicate tone of pearl gray.

Niccolò Machiavelli and the 500 years of the publishing of "The Prince"

See on Scoop.it - Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d’Italia

This year we are celebrating 500 years of the publishing of the master work, The Prince written by Niccolo Machiavelli. Machiavelli is one of the most famous people in the history of Florence, so if you walk in town you might see his image sculpted in one of the niches of the Uffizi loggia. He lived at the end of the 15th century and was a writer, philosopher, playwright and Secretary of the Republic of Florence. He was involved in politics in a very crucial moment in political history, when Tuscany wasn’t yet unified, and all the little towns close to Florence were finding powerful allies to fight the Town of the lilly in order and mantain their freedom.

With the help of Charles V, after 18 years of the Republic, the Medici family returned to Florence with an iron fist. Machiavelli was dismissed and put into exile in his beautiful property at San Andrea in Percussina, located about 10km from town. In this period he wrote “Mandrake” and “The Prince”. The latter is a treatise on how a prince should develop some specific skills to govern a state well… The most famous phrase, “the end justifies the means” has become an Italian saying.

To celebrate the event I propose a beautiful itinerary, a day hike on the hills of Florence, along the ancient pathways heading south. We will wak through backroads, finishing up at the Machiavelli Villa. Here not only can you feel Machiavelli’s ghost walking through the vineyards but you can taste a yummy country meal and wash it down (of course) with a little Chianti wine and the best focaccia bread of the area. Afterwards we can return to Florence any way you wish- by foot or by bus.

Grootscheepse restauratie Pompeii van start

See on Scoop.it - La Gazzetta Di Lella - News From Italy - Italiaans Nieuws

See on Scoop.it - La Gazzetta Di Lella - News From Italy - Italiaans Nieuws
