Heavily indebted opera house will now be able to keep up to 200 jobs after union disputeA month after threatening to sack its entire orchestra and chorus, Rome’s historic opera house has pulled back from the brink, hammering out an accord with its fractious unions.The management of the opera house, which has been in trouble for years over huge debts and labour disputes, announced that the 182 jobs of musicians and chorus members will be saved.Managers had announced in October that the employees would be sacked and then hired back on a freelance basis.The announcement caused uproar in the Italian arts world, with one union leader calling it a “mortal blow” not just for culture in Rome but for the whole country.
